Michael John Carnac Fisher


Michael John Carnac Fisher was born in London in 1919. He was the son of Capt. William Lawrence Fisher and his wife Eleanor Mary who in 1939 were living at Tasburgh House, Ipswich Road, Tasburgh. He had joined the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) which was attached to the 12th Infantry Brigade, part of the 4th Infantry Division that was sent to France after the outbreak of WW2 to join the British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F)

In May 1940 the German Army swept into France and forced the B.E.F to retreat towards Dunkirk where as a 2nd Lieutenant Michael Fisher and the Royal Fusiliers were part of the rear guard holding the line along the Nieuport-Veurne-Dunkirk Canal thereby enabling almost 340,000 Allied troops to be evacuated from Dunkirk's port and beaches.

He died on the 31st May and is buried in the Oostduinkirke Communal Cemetery.
